The story
Everyone here tells the Poe story, and the best part of it is false. Edgar Allan Poe was posted to Castle Island in 1827, an eighteen-year-old private in the 1st U.S. Artillery who had lied about his age and enlisted as Edgar A. Perry. He would have heard about Lieutenant Robert Massie, killed in a sword duel on Christmas Day 1817, and the men who supposedly walled his killer up alive. People trace The Cask of Amontillado back to that. Lieutenant Gustavus Drane was never walled up. He stayed in the army and died on active duty in 1846.
The granite around you is the eighth fort on this spot since 1634. Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, who made West Point a real school, laid it out, and the walls went up between 1833 and 1851 in Rockport granite, thirty feet high and five and a half feet thick.
It stopped being an island in 1928, when the causeway went in. Walk the loop with the water on your right, and stop when a plane comes over low into Logan.
