The story
Much of the ground around the Locks was clay and glacial till dug out of the lock chambers. Carl S. English Jr. arrived in 1931 as assistant gardener and spent 43 years turning it, in the Corps' words, into a garden worthy of serious study. With his wife, Edith Hardin English, he traded seeds with botanical gardens around the world, and ship captains coming through the Locks brought him specimens. Today there are more than 570 species and 1,500 varieties, including eight dawn redwoods grown from some of the first seeds of that tree to reach the United States; it was known only as a fossil until it was found growing in China.
The garden was named for him in 1974. The visitor center by the entrance, once a blacksmith shop for the Locks according to The Corps Foundation, has exhibits on the history of the canal.

Gran parte del terreno alrededor de las esclusas era arcilla y till glaciar extraídos de las cámaras. Carl S. English Jr. llegó en 1931 como jardinero ayudante y pasó 43 años convirtiéndolo, en palabras del Cuerpo de Ingenieros, en un jardín digno de estudio serio. Con su esposa, Edith Hardin English, intercambió semillas con jardines botánicos de todo el mundo, y los capitanes que volvían por las esclusas le traían ejemplares. Hoy hay más de 570 especies y 1500 variedades, entre ellas ocho metasecuoyas nacidas de algunas de las primeras semillas de ese árbol que llegaron a Estados Unidos; solo se conocía como fósil hasta que se halló vivo en China.
