The story
Every fish moving between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, endangered salmon among them, has to pass the locks, the spillway or this ladder. Hiram M. Chittenden planned a ladder from the start; the Corps renovated it in 1976 with 21 steps, or weirs, and the underwater viewing room reopened after renovation in 2021.
The Corps names the best months: Chinook from July to November, best in late August; coho from August to November, best in late September; sockeye from June to October, best in July. Sockeye here are silver, with no spots on their backs, and turn red on the way to the spawning beds. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe count the fish as co-managers of the Lake Washington fisheries.
