Collegiate Gothic towers on a hill at Chestnut Hill, west of the city and outside Boston proper
The story
Boston College is not in Boston. It started there in 1863, in the South End, as a Jesuit school for the sons of Irish immigrants who were not welcome elsewhere, and it moved out to Chestnut Hill in 1913 because it had run out of room. The name stayed behind.
What it built on the hill was the first serious Collegiate Gothic in America. Gasson Hall, finished in 1913, has the tower you see from the reservoir, and the style was chosen deliberately: Gothic said old, European and Catholic at a moment when the college was none of the first and very much the last.
The Green Line B branch ends at the campus gate, which makes it the easiest campus in the city to reach and the one most visitors never think to. Walk up to Gasson and look back east; the skyline is six miles off.

Boston College no está en Boston. Empezó allí en 1863, en el South End, como escuela jesuita para los hijos de inmigrantes irlandeses que no eran bienvenidos en otros sitios, y se mudó a Chestnut Hill en 1913 porque se había quedado sin espacio. El nombre se quedó atrás.
Lo que levantó en la colina fue el primer gótico universitario serio de América. Gasson Hall, terminado en 1913, tiene la torre que se ve desde el embalse, y el estilo se eligió a propósito: el gótico decía antiguo, europeo y católico en un momento en que el colegio no era nada de lo primero y sí mucho de lo último.
