The story

On March 30, 1942, 227 Japanese Americans living on Bainbridge Island, most of them citizens, were brought to the Eagledale ferry dock and put aboard the ferry Kehloken, the first community forcibly removed under Executive Order 9066. They were taken to Manzanar in California, and most were later moved to Minidoka in Idaho; after the war a little over half came home.

The memorial, part of Minidoka National Historic Site since 2008, carries the words Nidoto Nai Yoni, Let It Not Happen Again. Its Story Wall, designed by the architect Johnpaul Jones and opened in 2011, runs 276 feet, one foot for each of the 276 people of Japanese ancestry living on the island that day, and names them all. The Departure Deck stands on the dock's exact site, facing the Winslow ferry terminal. It is free, open dawn to dusk, and best reached by car or BI Ride: its association strongly discourages walking there from the ferry.
