The story
Winslow's ferry landing sits on the north shore of Eagle Harbor, about 35 minutes from Seattle's Colman Dock on the busiest route Washington State Ferries runs: 5.2 million riders in 2025, and more walk-on passengers than any other route. Steamer service to Seattle began in 1887. The car ferry moved here from Port Blakely in 1937, and in 1950 the state built a new car ferry dock at the east end of town.
Directly across the harbor is the site of the old Eagledale ferry dock. On March 30, 1942, 227 Japanese American islanders were put aboard the ferry Kehloken there, the first community forced from their homes under Executive Order 9066, and the memorial on that shore now looks back at this terminal. Long before, the Suquamish had encampments on the points on either side of the harbor mouth.
