The story
The Yosemite Museum, designed by Herbert Maier, opened to the public on May 29, 1926. It was the first building constructed as a museum in the national park system. Its exhibits tell the cultural history of Yosemite's Miwok and Paiute people from 1850 to the present, and at times there are demonstrations of stone tool making, basket weaving and beadwork.
Out front you can touch a giant sequoia cross section and see a re-created umacha, a cedar bark house. Behind the museum, the Indian Village of Ahwahnee stands on the site of what was the largest Indian village in the valley. It has a bark house, a Miwok cabin, a chief's house, a sweathouse and a ceremonial roundhouse, built in 1992.
The village is not only an exhibit. The local American Indian community still uses it for ceremonies and gatherings, so walk it with respect. The trail is self guiding and wheelchair accessible.

El Museo de Yosemite, diseñado por Herbert Maier, abrió al público el 29 de mayo de 1926. Fue el primer edificio construido como museo en el sistema de parques nacionales. Sus exhibiciones cuentan la historia cultural de los pueblos miwok y paiute de Yosemite desde 1850 hasta el presente, y a veces hay demostraciones de fabricación de herramientas de piedra, cestería y trabajo con cuentas.
