The story
Start in Yosemite Village at the Exploration Center, the building that used to be the Valley Visitor Center. Its exhibits cover the park's geology, plants and animals, rock climbing, and the people who first lived here, and the free Spirit of Yosemite film runs 23 minutes. It is open all year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., wheelchair accessible, with tactile exhibits.
People have lived here for as long as 8,000 years, and called the valley Ahwahnee. In 1851 the Mariposa Battalion, a state sanctioned militia, entered it, burned villages and food stores and drove families out. In 1864 President Lincoln signed the grant that gave the valley and the Mariposa Grove to California, to be held for public use, resort and recreation, inalienable for all time. Yosemite became a national park in 1890.
In 2026 there is no vehicle reservation, but valley parking is usually full after 9 a.m. The free shuttle stops outside.
