The resting place of many early Yosemite residents, among them Galen Clark and eleven known graves of Yosemite Indians.
The story
The Yosemite Cemetery, at the west end of Yosemite Village, is the final resting place of many of the valley's early residents.
Galen Clark, the first state appointed guardian of the Yosemite grant, dug his own grave here, planted seedling sequoias from the Mariposa Grove around it and chose his own granite marker; he died on March 24, 1910. Nearby lie James Mason Hutchings, who brought the first tourist party in 1855 and hired John Muir at his sawmill in 1869; Forest S. Townsley, the first chief ranger; George Anderson, the first to climb Half Dome, in 1875; and the photographer George Fiske.
The cemetery also holds eleven known graves of Yosemite Indians. Lucy Brown, buried here, was one of the last American Indian survivors of the Mariposa Battalion's 1851 raid.
It is open at all times but unlit, and its rocky dirt trail is not accessible.
