The story

The Yellowstone Tribal Heritage Center stands between the Visitor Education Center and the Old Faithful Lodge, in the building Frank J. Haynes opened in 1884 as the park's first photography store and studio, restored in 2012. Today Indigenous artists, scholars and presenters from the park's 27 associated Tribes meet visitors here and speak for themselves. It is a partnership of the National Park Service and Yellowstone Forever, with Tribal consultation.

The park says the human history of this region goes back more than 11,000 years. People hunted, fished, gathered plants, quarried obsidian and used the thermal waters for religious and medicinal purposes; the Tukudika, a band of Mountain Shoshone, lived here for thousands of years. Superintendent Philetus W. Norris later spread the idea that Native people feared the geysers, a myth the park says belied the evidence.

Next door, the Old Faithful Lodge took its present shape in 1928 in a design by Gilbert Stanley Underwood. In 2026 the center is open to October 3 and closed on Sundays.
