The story
The Old Faithful Inn was designed by Robert C. Reamer, who wanted its asymmetry to reflect the chaos of nature, and built in the winter of 1903 to 1904 after the only hotel in the basin burned down in 1894. It is nearly 700 feet long and seven stories high, with a lobby ceiling 65 feet up, a massive rhyolite fireplace and railings of contorted lodgepole pine. The park says it is considered the largest log structure in the world.
It opened in 1904 with electric light, but Reamer made the fixtures look like candlesticks, and evening meals had a string quartet. The Hebgen Lake earthquake of 1959 shook the Old House off its foundation, and in 1988 the North Fork Fire came close; firefighters, roof sprinklers and a wind shift saved it. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
In 2026 the park lists the dining room open to October 19, while the hotel operator gives the season as ending October 12. The walk ends here; watch Old Faithful from the porch.
