The story
Chippewa Square was laid out in 1815 and named for the American soldiers killed at the Battle of Chippawa in the War of 1812.
At the center stands James Oglethorpe, the founder, by Daniel Chester French with the architect Henry Bacon, the pair who later made the Lincoln Memorial. It was unveiled in 1910. Oglethorpe faces south, toward the old enemy in Spanish Florida, with his sword drawn.
The north side is where the bench scene that opens Forrest Gump was filmed in 1994. The bench was a prop: one is in the Savannah History Museum and the other at Paramount. The Savannah Theatre, of 1818, is the oldest building on the square.

La Plaza Chippewa se trazó en 1815 y se bautizó en honor a los soldados estadounidenses muertos en la batalla de Chippawa, en la guerra de 1812.
En el centro se alza James Oglethorpe, el fundador, obra de Daniel Chester French con el arquitecto Henry Bacon, la pareja que después hizo el Monumento a Lincoln. Se inauguró en 1910. Oglethorpe mira hacia el sur, hacia el viejo enemigo de la Florida española, con la espada desenvainada.
En el lado norte se filmó en 1994 la escena del banco con la que empieza Forrest Gump. El banco era de utilería: uno está en el Savannah History Museum y el otro en Paramount. El Savannah Theatre, de 1818, es el edificio más antiguo de la plaza.
