The story
Step back onto the grass to the west and look about a third of the way up. The marble changes colour along a clean horizontal line. That line is a twenty-two year pause. Private donations built the first 156 feet between 1848 and 1854, then the money ran out and the unfinished stub stood there through the Civil War. The Army Corps of Engineers restarted the work in 1876, by which time the original Baltimore quarry was closed. The stone above the seam came from elsewhere and has weathered differently ever since.
The capstone went on 6 December 1884 at 555 feet 5 inches. The point on top is a nine-inch aluminium tip, and in 1884 aluminium was still a rare metal priced like silver. That small casting was the largest piece of aluminium anyone had yet poured.
Going up is free but the timed tickets go fast. The lodge window opens at 8:45 a.m.

Retroceda hasta el césped del lado oeste y mire a un tercio de la altura. El mármol cambia de color siguiendo una línea horizontal limpia. Esa línea es una pausa de veintidós años.
