The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), colloquially known as the Blacksonian, is a Smithsonian Institution museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was established in 2003 and opened its permanent home in 2016 with a ceremony led by President Barack Obama.
The story
Congress voted this museum into existence on December 16, 2003, and it did not open until September 24, 2016. George W. Bush, who signed the bill, stood on the stage at the opening thirteen years later. Nothing about this building came quickly.
Look at the shape first. Three tiers, each one wider than the one below it, flaring upward like a step pyramid turned over. The form is borrowed. It is the crown on a Yoruba caryatid, a carved wooden column figure from West Africa whose head carries the weight of the roof. David Adjaye, the design architect, put a West African crown on the National Mall and named it the Corona.
Then look at the angle. The Corona leans out at seventeen degrees. That is not a designer's whim. It is the exact pitch of the capstone on the Washington Monument, a few hundred yards west across the lawn. The newest building on the Mall is tilted to agree with the oldest thing standing near it.
The skin is 3,600 panels of cast aluminum finished in bronze, around 230 tons of metal. It is a screen, not a wall. From outside it reads as one dark solid mass. From the galleries inside you look out through it, and the Mall arrives filtered through the pattern.
The last thing to understand is the part you cannot see. More than half of this building is underground. Five floors stand above grade, and the history galleries are dug in below them, which is where the museum carries its weight in every sense of the word. You go down into the history and come back up into the culture.
That was the site's doing. This was the last open ground on the Mall, at Constitution Avenue and Fifteenth Street, and a museum this size could only fit by going down.
