The story
Fifty-six granite pillars ring this plaza, one for each state and territory that made up the United States during the war. They stand open on both sides, so you walk between them rather than around them. Two pavilions face each other across the water, Atlantic at one end and Pacific at the other, because the country fought two wars at once and this memorial refuses to merge them.
Go to the west end and stand at the Freedom Wall. It carries 4,048 gold stars, and each star stands for one hundred Americans who died. That is the only way a number that size goes on a wall.
Then look for Kilroy. Two small engravings of the wartime cartoon, the bald man peering over a fence, are tucked into corners on the Atlantic and Pacific sides. Soldiers drew him everywhere they went. Almost nobody here finds him.
