The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, commonly called the Vietnam Memorial, is a U.S. national memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring service members of the United States Armed Forces who served in the Vietnam War. The two-acre (8,100 m2) site is dominated by two black granite walls engraved with the names of those service members who died or remain missing as a result of their service in Vietnam and Sou
The story
Most memorials on this Mall stand up. This one goes down. Maya Lin was twenty one years old and still an undergraduate at Yale when she entered a blind competition in 1981 and beat 1,420 other submissions with a drawing of a cut in the ground. Two walls of black granite, each 246 feet 9 inches long, meeting at an angle of 125 degrees and 12 minutes. One arm points at the Washington Monument, the other at the Lincoln Memorial, so the memorial is tied to the two figures the country had already agreed to honor.
Walk in from either end and the path slopes down under you. The panels start at ankle height and rise above your head by the middle. That is the whole design. The war gets larger as you go in, and you climb back out of it on the far side.
The names are not alphabetical. They run in the order the men and women died, starting at the joint in the middle, out to the east end, then picking up again at the far west tip and running back to the joint. The war closes where it opened. People who died on the same day, in the same helicopter, stay beside each other. There were 57,939 names at the dedication in November 1982. There are more than 58,000 now, because a name is still added when a death is traced back to a wound from the war. A diamond next to a name means the death was confirmed. A cross means the person was missing.
The granite is polished, which was Lin's intent and her critics' complaint. You see yourself standing in among the names. The design was attacked hard enough that a bronze group of three servicemen was added nearby in 1984 as a compromise, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial followed in 1993. Both stand back from the wall. Neither one changes what happens when you walk down into it.
