Abraham Lincoln (1920) is a colossal seated figure of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), sculpted by Daniel Chester French (1850–1931) and carved by the Piccirilli Brothers. Located in the Lincoln Memorial, constructed between 1914 and 1922 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the statue was unveiled in 1922.
The story
French designed this Lincoln at ten feet. Then he had photographs of it blown up to fourteen and eighteen feet, propped them on wooden frames inside the chamber, and saw that a ten foot president would vanish in a room sixty feet high. He took it to nineteen. He made the model; six brothers named Piccirilli cut the marble in a Bronx studio, and the carving alone took more than a year.
Then the light ruined it. Daylight came in low from the east, flattened the face, and lit up his shins. French called it a disaster. Lamps were rigged above the statue to put the expression back. So the face you came to see is lit by wiring, not by the sun.
You will hear that the hands spell A and L in sign language. The Park Service does not go that far. Their own line is that it takes some imagination to see signs in Lincoln's hands.
Come after dark. It was finished for that light.

Después mandó ampliar fotografías de la obra a cuatro y a cinco metros y medio, las montó sobre bastidores de madera dentro de la sala y comprobó que un presidente de tres metros desaparecería en un recinto de dieciocho metros de alto.
