The story
The barges came first. Congress set aside this stretch of the Washington Channel for a fish market in 1805, seventeen years before New York opened Fulton, and vendors have sold from boats tied up at the quay ever since. You are not buying from a shop here. You are buying off the water.
Everything around it is new because everything around it was destroyed. Urban renewal cleared Southwest Washington between the 1950s and the 1970s and displaced roughly 23,000 residents and 1,500 businesses. The market survived because the stall owners fought for it in Congress. The Wharf, the mile of restaurants and music halls beside it, only opened in 2017.
Do what locals do. Buy blue crabs steamed hot off the barge, carry them to the seawall and eat standing up. Come before noon on a Saturday. By two the line at the crab barges runs down the pier.

En 1805 el Congreso reservó este tramo del canal de Washington para un mercado de pescado, diecisiete años antes de que Nueva York abriera Fulton, y desde entonces los vendedores despachan desde embarcaciones amarradas al muelle.
