The story
Alexandria was chartered in 1749 and Georgetown in 1751, both tobacco ports, and both older than the capital later drawn around them. Georgetown sat at the head of navigation, the last point a seagoing ship could reach before the falls. In 1790 Maryland gave up one and Virginia the other to build the District. Alexandria then left again: Congress approved the retrocession on 9 July 1846, and Virginia took the county back in March 1847. The water taxi runs that old road between the two ports, and crosses a state line that moved.
The season is March to December. Boats leave The Wharf from the Transit Pier for Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria and National Harbor, roughly every half hour to an hour depending on the day, and the crossing runs near thirty minutes.
Going downriver, Washington is on your left. Sit on that side and the Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson memorials arrive in order, with nothing in front of them.

Alexandria se fundó en 1749 y Georgetown en 1751, los dos puertos tabacaleros y los dos más antiguos que la capital que después se trazó alrededor de ellos.
