The story

The Beaux-Arts front on Fifth Avenue is Richard Morris Hunt's, finished in 1902, seven years after he died. Look above the paired columns. Four stacks of limestone sit up there rough and uncarved. They were meant to become sculptural groups, the money ran out after the financial panic of 1901, and nobody ever came back with a chisel. Thousands of people sit on those steps every day without looking up.

The museum also swallowed its own first building. The original of 1880 was red brick Ruskinian Gothic by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould, and the later wings closed around it on every side. Its west facade is still standing, indoors, and you can walk right up to it in the Robert Lehman Wing.

One thing the ticket desk will not volunteer: the same ticket gets you into The Met Cloisters uptown on the same day.
