The Metropolitan Museum of Art, colloquially referred to as the Met, is an encyclopedic art museum in New York City. By floor area, it is the fourth-largest museum in the world and the largest art museum in the Americas.

The story

Look up before you climb the steps. Above each pair of columns sits a rough block of limestone that was meant to become a carved figure. Richard Morris Hunt designed this Fifth Avenue front, died in 1895, and left his son to finish it in 1902. The money ran out after the financial panic of 1901, the carvers never came, and New York has walked under the unfinished blocks for more than a century without looking up.

The museum is older than the building. A group of Americans in Paris proposed it in 1870, it opened in 1872 in a house downtown, and it moved to the park in 1880.

Two practical things. New York State residents, and students from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, pay what they wish, one cent counts, so bring the ID. Your ticket also covers the Cloisters uptown the same day, and the ground-level door at 81st Street usually has a shorter line than the grand staircase.
