A museum in New York.
The story
Before you climb the steps, cross Fifth Avenue and look at the top of the entrance. Above each pair of columns sits a stack of rough limestone blocks that was never carved. Richard Morris Hunt designed this front in 1894 and died the following year. His son proposed figures for Painting, Sculpture, Architecture and Music, then the financial panic of 1901 drained the budget and the stone was left square. It has stayed that way for more than a century, in plain sight, above the most photographed steps in New York.
The building behind that front is older than the front itself. The first Met on this site opened in March 1880, red brick and Gothic, designed by Calvert Vaux, who also laid out Central Park, with Jacob Wrey Mould. Later wings grew around it until it was swallowed whole. Its west wall is still standing indoors: walk into the Robert Lehman Wing and you are looking at the outside of an 1880 building.
