The Met Fifth Avenue is the primary museum building for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The building is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
The story
The museum opened here on 30 March 1880, in a red-brick Gothic building by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. That building is still standing. Later wings grew around it until they swallowed it whole, and the west wall of the original now faces indoors. Walk into the Robert Lehman Wing and you can see the old brick, weathered as if it were still outside.
The Fifth Avenue front is Richard Morris Hunt's, designed in 1894. He died the next year, and the building opened in 1902. Look above the paired columns at the four piles of rough limestone. Those were meant to be carved into sculptural groups for four ages of art. Hunt died before he settled the designs, the financial panic of 1901 took the money, and they were never cut.
Use the ground-level door on 81st Street instead of climbing the great staircase. Same museum, and it skips the crowd on the steps.

El museo abrió aquí el 30 de marzo de 1880, en un edificio gótico de ladrillo rojo de Calvert Vaux y Jacob Wrey Mould. Ese edificio sigue en pie. Las ampliaciones posteriores crecieron a su alrededor hasta tragárselo entero, y la fachada oeste del original hoy mira hacia dentro. Entre en el Ala Robert Lehman y verá el ladrillo viejo, desgastado como si aún estuviera a la intemperie.
