The story
The Ahwahnee was completed in 1927, built in a rustic style with American Indian motifs, and it is a National Historic Landmark. The Park Service notes that it is popular even with people who are not staying there.
Look for the historic paintings, the stained glass and the woven tapestries, and the Great Lounge and Dining Room. During World War II the hotel served as a United States Navy hospital, and two chapels for servicemen were improvised inside it, one of them in the hotel bar.
The Dining Room is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with reservations recommended and a dress code at dinner; the bar is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. This is the end of the walk: the free shuttle runs back to Yosemite Village.
