The story
Seattle's Territorial University opened on September 16, 1861, in a two storey building at what is now Fourth Avenue and University Street, entered under a portico of four Ionic columns. In 1908 the history professor Edmond S. Meany tried to save the building, and only its columns of hand fluted cedar escaped demolition. They stood by the Quad from 1911, named by Meany and Herbert T. Condon for Loyalty, Industry, Faith and Efficiency, whose initials spell LIFE. In spring 1921 they were moved to this grove, to a student design by Marshall W. Gill. New students visit at orientation and again after graduation to touch their column. The university's own page on the columns also records that the Duwamish, about 250 people in 1854, never received the reservation promised to them.
