The story
In October 1906 the company organising the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, the world's fair held here from June 1 to October 16, 1909, hired John C. Olmsted of the Olmsted Brothers to design its grounds. He aimed the fair's main axis at Mount Rainier, borrowing the mountain as part of the design. The Rainier Vista is what remains of that plan, and the fair's Geyser Basin survives as this fountain. Students called it Frosh Pond for decades, after an old tradition of throwing freshmen in. It took its present name in 1961, when Joseph Drumheller gave the fountain for the university's centennial. Of more than two dozen fair buildings, only Architecture Hall and Cunningham Hall remain. En octubre de 1906 la compañía que organizaba la Exposición Alaska-Yukon-Pacífico, la exposición universal celebrada aquí del 1 de junio al 16 de octubre de 1909, contrató a John C.
