A 1924 stone bench on the Skyline Trail marking the camp from which Hazard Stevens and P. B. Van Trump made the first documented ascent in 1870, where their guide Sluiskin waited.
The story
This rock bench marks the camp from which Hazard Stevens and Philemon Beecher Van Trump made the first documented ascent of Mount Rainier on August 17, 1870. James Longmire led them up the Nisqually, and a guide named Sluiskin brought them to this ridge. The stones say Sluiskin waited here for their return, that Stevens identified the place on August 17, 1915, and that the Mountaineers and the Mazamas built the bench in 1924.
Stevens's own account, published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1876, puts them on the summit at five in the afternoon, followed by a night in a steam cave in the crater. The park notes oral records of Native people reaching the summit long before, and Nisqually stories of the summit and its lake. Stevens wrote that Sluiskin warned them of great dangers; historians now treat such stories as doubtful. The park calls Sluiskin Yakama; the Yakama leader Saluskin said he was a Columbia River man. Sluiskin Falls, below, carries his name.
