The alpine lodge the Rainier National Park Company opened on July 1, 1917, framed in weathered Alaska yellow cedar, a National Historic Landmark.
The story
Ground was broken on July 20, 1916, and the Paradise Inn opened on July 1, 1917 with 37 guest rooms and a dining room for 400, at a cost of $91,000. Its timber frame came from Alaska yellow cedars killed by an old wildfire a few miles down the road. Hans Fraehnke made the lobby's registration desk, cedar tables, a mail drop the park calls the stump, and the cases for a 14 foot clock and the piano, which Harry Truman played in 1945.
The Annex of 1920 added 104 rooms. Snow buries Paradise for more than half the year and once pushed the inn downhill until braces were added, and the inn still closes every autumn. The Park Service bought it in the 1950s and rehabilitated it from 2006 to 2008. It is a National Historic Landmark with 121 rooms, none with a television or telephone.
