The story
Boats have crossed this water on a schedule since 1817, when the Richmond Turnpike Company put a steamboat on the run. In 1838 a Staten Island boatman named Cornelius Vanderbilt bought control of the line. He went on to become the richest man in America, and this ferry was one of the first things he owned.
The fare was set at five cents in 1897 and stayed a nickel for close to eighty years. On July 4, 1997, the city dropped it to nothing. It has been free ever since, which makes 5.2 miles across New York Harbor the best value in the city. About 75,000 people ride on a weekday, most of them going to work and not looking up.
Stand on the right side of the deck heading out. The Statue of Liberty is on that side. You cannot stay aboard at St. George. Walk off, follow the signs around, and get straight back on the next boat.

Hay barcos cruzando estas aguas con horario desde 1817, cuando la Richmond Turnpike Company puso un vapor en la ruta.
