A cobblestone lane of pubs and outdoor tables in the financial district, one of Manhattan's oldest streets.
The story
The street is named for its surface. In March 1657 the residents of what was then Brouwer Street, Brewer Street, petitioned to have it paved and paid for the work themselves. The complaint was dust. Brewery wagon horses threw it up all day and it settled on the furniture and curtains of the houses either side. The work was finished in 1658, which made this the first paved street in New Amsterdam.
Almost nothing in front of you is that old. The Great Fire of 1835 took this whole ward, and more than 600 buildings went up in the First Ward in 1836 to replace what burned. That is where the four-story Greek Revival fronts come from. In 1980 the western block was closed and removed for 85 Broad Street, so what is left is two blocks, not the original run.
The stones are newer than the buildings. About 23,000 were laid in a restoration finished in 2000, four years after the city protected the block. Stand at the Hanover Square end and look west to see the whole length.

La calle se llama así por su pavimento. En marzo de 1657 los vecinos de la entonces Brouwer Street, la calle de los cerveceros, pidieron por escrito que se empedrara y pagaron la obra de su bolsillo. El motivo era el polvo. Los caballos de los carros de la cervecería lo levantaban todo el día y se posaba en los muebles y las cortinas de las casas de ambos lados. La obra terminó en 1658 y convirtió a esta en la primera calle empedrada de Nueva Ámsterdam.
Casi nada de lo que tiene delante es tan antiguo. El Gran Incendio de 1835 arrasó todo el First Ward, y en 1836 se levantaron más de 600 edificios para reemplazar lo quemado.
