The story
Most people come into this building for the National Portrait Gallery and never find out that the other half of it is a separate museum. The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds the oldest federal art collection in the country, going back to 1829. It is free, and it is usually half empty.
Go to the first floor, west wing, and find James Hampton's The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly. Hampton was born in Elloree, South Carolina, in 1909 and worked as a janitor for the General Services Administration from 1946 until he died. In 1950 he rented a garage on 7th Street Northwest, a few blocks from where you are standing, and for fourteen years he built this in there after his shifts. It is 180 pieces: old furniture, cardboard, light bulbs, jelly jars, shards of mirror and desk blotters, held together with tacks and pins and tape, then wrapped in the gold and silver foil he saved. He told almost nobody. His landlord, Meyer Wertlieb, found it in November 1964 when he went to see why the rent had stopped. Hampton also left a 108-page notebook written in a script nobody has ever deciphered. The work came to the Smithsonian in 1970.
Then go up to the third and fourth floors, to the Luce Foundation Center. It is open storage: more than 3,300 works packed into 64 glass cases, floor to ceiling, the paintings and sculpture that would otherwise be sitting in a warehouse. Nothing has been chosen for you. You just look.
Free, like every Smithsonian. Open until seven, later than anything on the Mall, so save it for the end of the day. The Metro is Gallery Place, and you come up in Chinatown.
