The story
The National Portrait Gallery is not on the Mall. It sits a few blocks north, at 8th and F, sharing the Old Patent Office Building with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the building is half the reason to come. It was begun in 1836 and is one of the oldest federal buildings in Washington. During the Civil War the Patent Office was turned into a hospital, and the wounded lay between cases of patent models. Walt Whitman came here to sit with them. In March 1865 the same halls were cleared for Lincoln's second inaugural ball, six weeks before he was killed.
Go upstairs to America's Presidents first. It is the only complete set of presidential portraits outside the White House. Gilbert Stuart's full-length Washington of 1796 is the one people stand in front of longest, but the room worth your time holds Kehinde Wiley's portrait of Barack Obama and Amy Sherald's of Michelle Obama, both unveiled in 2018. Expect a line for those two in the middle of the day. At opening, or late in the afternoon, there is none.
Downstairs, the Kogod Courtyard is the best free room in Washington. The old open courtyard was roofed in 2007 with a rippling glass canopy designed by Norman Foster, and there are tables and nobody hurrying you along. It is where to eat the sandwich you carried in, or wait out a rainstorm.
Two practical things. Admission is free, like every Smithsonian. And the gallery keeps later hours than the museums on the Mall, so put it at the end of the day and give the Mall your morning. The Metro stop is Gallery Place, and you come up inside Chinatown, a different city from the marble one you just left.

La National Portrait Gallery no está en el Mall. Queda unas calles al norte, en 8th y F, y comparte el antiguo edificio de la Oficina de Patentes con el Smithsonian American Art Museum. El edificio es la mitad del motivo para venir. Se empezó en 1836 y es uno de los edificios federales más antiguos de Washington. Durante la Guerra Civil la Oficina de Patentes se convirtió en hospital y los heridos quedaron tendidos entre las vitrinas de modelos de patentes. Walt Whitman venía a sentarse con ellos. En marzo de 1865 esas mismas salas se despejaron para el segundo baile inaugural de Lincoln, seis semanas antes de que lo mataran.
Suba primero a America's Presidents. Es la única colección completa de retratos presidenciales fuera de la Casa Blanca.
