The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (MLKML) is the central facility of the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL), constructed and named in honor of the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The story
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed exactly one public library in his career, and it stands at 901 G Street NW. He never saw it finished. He died in 1969, the building opened in 1972, and the black steel and glass box that most people walk past as an office block was completed from his drawings by other hands.
Go in. General entry is free and asks for no membership. The lobby carries Don Miller's 1986 mural of King's life, restored during the $211 million renovation by Mecanoo and OTJ Architects that reopened the building in September 2020.
Then take the elevator to the top. The roof terrace is open to the public, it is planted, and it looks out over downtown Washington. Free elevated views are rare in this city, and almost nobody standing on the pavement outside knows this one is up there.
