The story
Fish sellers built this pier. Elton Ainsworth and Arthur Dunn founded the Seattle Fish Company in 1889 and put up the Pike Street Wharf; the shed standing over the water dates to 1905, when a grain dealer and a steamship agent worked out of it.
Voters paid for the aquarium in the 1968 Forward Thrust bond, and it opened on May 20, 1977, at a cost of $5.4 million. It was one of the first in the country to show one region's own water instead of a tour of the world's oceans, so almost everything in the tanks lives a few miles from the door.
The Underwater Dome is the original 1977 room, 400,000 gallons of Puget Sound overhead and around you. Take a bench and stay ten minutes; the fish keep circling after the crowd moves on. The Ocean Pavilion next door opened August 29, 2024 with a tank of nearly half a million gallons.
