The story
Colman Dock is named for James Colman, a Scottish engineer who built the first pier here in 1882 for a coal company. It burned in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 and was rebuilt. On the night of April 25, 1912, the steamer Alameda set its engines full ahead instead of astern, hit the dock, knocked the clock tower into the bay and sank the sternwheeler Telegraph tied up alongside. The clock was fished out and the tower rebuilt.
The terminal you walk through now is new, a $489 million rebuild opened in 2023, and more than nine million people pass through it every year. Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the country.
Two practical things. The fare is collected westbound only, so the ride back from Bainbridge costs nothing. And once aboard, go up to the passenger deck and stand at the stern, not the bow. Leaving Seattle the skyline is behind you, and on a clear day Mount Rainier sits off to the south. Almost everyone crowds forward and misses both.
