The story
In 1907 the price of onions in Seattle went from ten cents a pound to a dollar, and the city blamed the commission houses standing between the farmer and the buyer. The council's answer was to let farmers back their wagons up on Pike Place and sell direct. Eight came the first morning. They sold out.
Before 1942, more than three quarters of the farmers here were Japanese American. Executive Order 9066 emptied their stalls. Farm permits fell from 515 in 1939 to 196 in 1943, and those families never returned to sell.
By 1971 the city planned to clear the site. Architect Victor Steinbrueck and the Friends of the Market forced a public vote instead, and Initiative One carried 59 to 41, protecting seven acres.
Everyone crowds the corner stall to watch the fish fly. The market's real point is the north arcade, where the person behind the table grew what is on it. Come before ten and you can talk to them.

En 1907 el precio de la cebolla en Seattle pasó de diez centavos la libra a un dólar, y la ciudad culpó a las casas comisionistas que se interponían entre el agricultor y el comprador.
