The story
Saint Joseph's Oratory began with a small chapel built through the work of Brother André in 1904. Pilgrims continued to arrive, and the site expanded across Mount Royal into a vast shrine whose basilica is crowned by a 97-metre dome. The original chapel still gives the complex a human starting point.
Inside, the experience shifts between scales. Thousands of votive lights make devotion visible one small flame at a time, while the basilica gathers visitors under an immense concrete shell. Chapels, gardens, the tomb of Saint Brother André, a museum and views across the city invite several kinds of visit.

General shrine access is free and currently runs from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the museum closes at 4:30 p.m. and seasonal gardens follow their own calendar.
