The story
The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts grew from the Art Association of Montreal, founded in 1860, into a five-pavilion complex on and near Sherbrooke Street. About 47,000 works now cross Québec and Canadian art, Indigenous art, international art, decorative arts, design and world cultures.
The pavilions make the museum feel like several institutions joined across a city street. That variety rewards selection. A focused hour with Inuit art, Québec painting, design or one temporary exhibition usually creates a stronger memory than an attempt to pass every doorway.
Choose one work before reading its label. Look for material, scale and the smallest deliberate detail, then use Universal Gallery for deeper research. The museum closes Monday, stays open until 9 p.m. Wednesday and uses holiday exceptions. Admission and exhibition access can change, so consult the official visit page.
