The park's main visitor center, opened in 2008 on the site of the Paradise Camp Lodge, with exhibits on the mountain, a film, a deli and the start of the Skyline Trail.
The story
Paradise took its name, the park says, when Martha Longmire first saw it and exclaimed, "Oh, what a paradise!" One park page calls her James Longmire's daughter-in-law, another his daughter. It lies at 5,400 feet and averages about 640 inches of snow a year; the 1,122 inches of 1971 to 1972 were a world record until 1998.
The first Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center, opened in 1966, was round with a flat roof and burned 300 to 500 gallons of diesel a day to melt snow off it. The present building replaced it in 2008. It stands on the footprint of the Paradise Camp Lodge, built in 1918 and torn down in the mid 1950s, whose corners are marked by four pieces of its foundation; archaeologists found ski pole baskets and a partly full whiskey bottle here in 2006. Beside the building, the Muir steps carry John Muir's words about the meadows.
