The story
The Panama Hotel opened in August 1910 as a workingman's hotel in the heart of Seattle's Japantown. Its architect, Sabro Ozasa, was the first Japanese American architect to practise in Seattle, and its basement bathhouse, Hashidate yu, is one of only two intact Japanese public bathhouses left in the United States.
In 1942, as families were forced out under Executive Order 9066, many stored their belongings in the basement. The owner, Takashi Hori, who was also incarcerated, returned in 1945 to find about 50 trunks unclaimed. Through a glass panel in the floor of the tea house you can look down at belongings kept there since 1942. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

El Hotel Panama abrió en agosto de 1910 como hotel para trabajadores en el corazón del barrio japonés de Seattle. Su arquitecto, Sabro Ozasa, fue el primer arquitecto japonés estadounidense que ejerció en Seattle, y su casa de baños del sótano, Hashidate yu, es uno de los dos únicos baños públicos japoneses intactos que quedan en Estados Unidos.
