Paley Park is a pocket park located at 3 East 53rd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on the former site of the Stork Club. Designed by the landscape architectural firm of Zion Breen Richardson Associates, it opened May 23, 1967.
The story
Three East 53rd Street is 4,200 square feet, which is nothing, and it is one of the best rooms in Midtown. William S. Paley's foundation paid for it and named it for his father, Samuel. Before it, the Stork Club stood here, a nightclub known for being particular about who got through the door. The park opened on 23 May 1967 and lets in everyone.
The back wall is the whole design. Twenty feet of water falling at 1,800 gallons a minute, loud enough to bury Madison Avenue. Stand on the steps and listen to the traffic, then walk four paces in. It is gone. Twelve honey locusts sit on a twelve foot grid, and the chairs are Bertoia wire chairs that are not bolted down, because Zion and Breen wanted people to move their own seat.
William Whyte studied spaces like this for The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces in 1980. Come before noon. At lunch every chair is taken.
