The story

The cornerstone went down on 15 August 1858 in front of 100,000 people, on ground that was then rocks and unopened streets, well north of the settled city. Two years later the money ran out, and the Civil War kept the work stopped for years.

When the cathedral finally opened on 25 May 1879, it had no spires. There was nothing left to pay for them. They went up nine years later, in October 1888, at 329.5 feet.

The marble is the old part. What runs the building is not. The restoration finished in 2015 cost $177 million and sank ten geothermal wells 2,200 feet under Fifth Avenue. They now heat and cool the whole cathedral.

Walk up the nave, then turn around. The rose window over the doors is 26 feet across, made by Charles Connick, and it faces west, so late afternoon is when it burns. Most people leave without ever looking back at it.
