The story
William E. Ebbitt bought a boarding house in 1856, somewhere near what is now Chinatown, and that purchase is why this place calls itself Washington's oldest saloon. The house says McKinley lodged there as a congressman, and that Grant, Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt drank at the bar, though the restaurant itself files most of that under reputation rather than record.
The modern story starts in 1970. A federal tax lien sale came up short, bidding was opened on the entire contents, and Stuart Davidson and John Laytham of Clyde's of Georgetown walked out owning the Old Ebbitt for $11,200. In 1983 they moved it around the corner to 675 15th Street NW, into a Beaux-Arts building that had been B. F. Keith's vaudeville theater. The animal heads above the bar are said to be Roosevelt's, the wooden bears said to have been brought in by Alexander Hamilton.
The kitchen serves up to 2,000 people a day, so noon and seven mean a wait. Come mid-afternoon and sit at the raw bar.

En 1856 el posadero William E. Ebbitt compró una casa de huéspedes, por la zona de lo que hoy es Chinatown, y de esa compra viene el título de taberna más antigua de Washington.
