The story

William Wilson Corcoran, the banker who later founded the Corcoran Gallery, bought fifteen acres of Georgetown hillside in 1848 because he had seen Mount Auburn outside Boston and wanted Washington to have one of its own. Congress incorporated the cemetery company in 1849. He spent more than fifty five thousand dollars on the grounds and the buildings, which at the time was the price of a serious mansion, and he is buried in it.

Two things here are worth the walk. The first is the chapel just inside the gate: twenty three feet by forty one, blue gneiss with red Seneca sandstone trim, designed by James Renwick Jr., the architect who gave the Mall the Smithsonian Castle and New York Saint Patrick's Cathedral. It is the smallest serious building he ever put up, and standing beside it you are looking at the Castle in miniature.

The second is a vault partway down the hill. In February 1862 Abraham Lincoln's eleven year old son Willie died of typhoid in the White House. The service was held in that chapel, and the coffin was placed in the Carroll family vault, lent by William Carroll, then clerk of the Supreme Court. Lincoln came back to it. The boy stayed there through the worst years of the war and left in 1865 on the train that carried his father home to Springfield. George Saunders built Lincoln in the Bardo out of those months, and it won the Booker Prize in 2017.

Captain George de la Roche laid the paths out by 1851 to follow the ground rather than fight it, so they wind down twenty two acres toward Rock Creek. That is also the practical warning: the walk back up is steep. Edwin Stanton, Dean Acheson, Katharine Graham and Ben Bradlee are all here. Come on a weekday morning, and wear shoes you can climb in.

Lincoln volvió a ella.

George Saunders viết Lincoln in the Bardo từ mấy tháng ấy, và tác phẩm đoạt giải Booker năm 2017.
