Dumbarton Oaks, formally the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, is a historic estate in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It was the residence and gardens of wealthy U.S. diplomat Robert Woods Bliss and his wife Mildred Barnes Bliss. The estate was founded by the Bliss couple, who gave the home and gardens to Harvard University in 1940.
The story
Robert and Mildred Bliss bought this Georgetown estate in 1920 and gave the house, the collections and sixteen acres to Harvard in 1940. Two things worth knowing happened in the same room. In the Music Room, on 8 May 1938, Nadia Boulanger conducted the premiere of the concerto Stravinsky wrote on Mildred Bliss's commission, known ever since simply as Dumbarton Oaks. In that same room, from 21 August to 7 October 1944, delegates drafted the Proposals for the Establishment of a General International Organization, the skeleton of the United Nations Charter. They met in two rounds because the Soviets would not sit at a table with the Chinese. Outside, Beatrix Farrand worked from 1921 to 1947 cutting the hillside into terraced garden rooms. Philip Johnson's Pre-Columbian pavilion, eight domed glass circles, was commissioned in 1959. The museum is free and opens at 11:30. The garden is ticketed and opens at 2, so see the house first.
