Tudor Place is a Federal-style mansion in Washington, D.C. that was originally the home of Thomas Peter and his wife, Martha Parke Custis Peter, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. The property, comprising one city block on the crest of Georgetown Heights, had an excellent view of the Potomac River.
The story
Georgetown climbs, and at the top of the hill one entire city block was never subdivided. Thomas Peter and Martha Parke Custis Peter bought it in 1805 for $8,000. She was Martha Washington's granddaughter, and what she carried up the hill is why this house matters more than its architecture. Tudor Place holds the largest public collection of objects owned by the first presidential family anywhere outside Mount Vernon: chair cushions, bedding, small things Martha Washington embroidered herself.
The architect was Dr. William Thornton, who won the competition for the United States Capitol. He finished this house in 1815, and the move he made here you will not find on the Capitol. Walk around to the south front. The circular domed portico is not stuck onto the wall the way a porch usually is. It is pulled into the house, so the round room and the columns share one space. Stand inside the saloon and look out through it toward the Potomac. That view is what the family bought.
Six generations stayed, under four owners, until Armistead Peter 3rd died in 1983 and left the place to a foundation. It opened to the public in 1988. Because nobody ever cleared it out and sold up, the rooms are not a curator's guess at how people lived. They are what one family actually kept, across 178 years.
Practical. The house is guided tour only and the groups are small, so book. Tuesday to Saturday from 10, Sunday from noon, closed Mondays, last tour at three. The garden is self-guided and it runs 5.5 acres, more than people expect. If your tour is at three, walk the garden first, because they stop admitting visitors at 3:30. Suggested donation is $10. Come in spring for the box hedges, or in the last hour of a summer afternoon, when the light comes up the hill.
