An easy loop from the lower Paradise parking lot to the best view of the Nisqually Glacier's snout, where the Nisqually River begins.
The story
The park says the best views of the Nisqually Glacier are from this trail. Look for the grey snout partway up the valley and the stream coming out from under it: the start of the Nisqually River, which runs down past Longmire under the suspension bridge. The Nisqually historian Cecelia Svinth Carpenter wrote that the mountain's name Ta-co-bet meant nourishing breasts, because the glacier was the place where the waters began.
The park lists many Tribal names for the mountain, among them Tahoma, Takhoma, Tacoma and Ta-co-bet. A 2025 study for the Puyallup Tribe's language program counted 20 names in seven Tribal languages, 18 of them Salishan; the City of Tacoma is named after the Lushootseed name, which the Tribe writes taqʷuʔmaʔ, and Tahoma comes from the Yakama form, tax̌úma. In 1792 George Vancouver named the mountain for Peter Rainier, who never saw it.
