The story

The Smithsonian took the last open building site on the Mall and gave it to a museum whose shape argues with everything around it. Douglas Cardinal, a Blackfoot architect, drew the curved mass to look like rock worn down by wind and water, faced in golden Kasota limestone from Minnesota. He left the project in 1998 and the design team finished it. The museum opened in September 2004.

The grounds are not landscaping. More than 33,000 plants in four habitats, wetland, hardwood forest, meadow and a cropland that is genuinely farmed, stand for the Chesapeake country before the city. Forty boulders called the Grandfather Rocks were quarried in Quebec and set around the site. The entrance faces east, toward the sunrise, at the request of Native communities.

Inside, the Potomac rises 120 feet. The collection is largely George Gustav Heye's, transferred to the Smithsonian by act of Congress in 1989, which is why so many labels here begin by saying who did the collecting.
