The story
Paul Allen opened this in 2000 as the Experience Music Project, built around his own Jimi Hendrix collection, and it kept that name until 2016. Frank Gehry took the form from guitars: his office gathered photographs of Stratocasters and brought guitar bodies into the studio to draw from. The skin is about 21,000 individually cut panels of stainless steel and aluminum finished in automotive paint, which is why the color changes as you walk around it. Locals call it the Blob, and Forbes once listed it among the ten ugliest buildings in the world.
Sky Church, the hall inside, is named for a phrase of Hendrix's and carries one of the largest indoor LED screens anywhere.
Arrive by monorail. The Seattle Center line runs straight through the building, so from Westlake you pass through the wall instead of walking up to it. Two minutes, a few dollars, and the best look at the exterior comes on the way in.
