Dale Chihuly's molten-glass dreamscapes, eight galleries and a garden where the sculptures grow among real plants, right under the Space Needle.
The story
Dale Chihuly was born in Tacoma, thirty miles south of here. In 1976 a head-on crash in England threw him through a windshield and cost him the sight in one eye. Three years later he dislocated a shoulder bodysurfing and could no longer hold the blowpipe. He has not blown the glass himself since. He directs the teams who do, which is why the work got bigger rather than smaller.
The Glasshouse is the room to give your time to. Forty feet tall, 4,500 square feet, and a suspended sculpture a hundred feet long in red, yellow and orange, one of the largest he has made. He built the room because he has loved conservatories all his life.
This ground was the Fun Forest amusement park, left over from the 1962 World's Fair, until the galleries opened here in May 2012. Come in the last hour before closing. The sun drops low, the sky does the lighting, and the Space Needle stands directly behind the glass.

Dale Chihuly nació en Tacoma, a cincuenta kilómetros al sur de aquí. En 1976 un choque frontal en Inglaterra lo lanzó a través del parabrisas y le costó la vista de un ojo. Tres años después se dislocó un hombro haciendo bodysurf y ya no pudo sostener la caña de soplar. Desde entonces no sopla el vidrio: dirige a los equipos que lo hacen, y por eso la obra se hizo más grande, no más pequeña.
